As a leader you might know how difficult it is to actually give the control and delegate. It takes one to go through several mind changes, like to allow the one whom you’re delegating the task to make his own mistakes, to allow for imperfections or rather differences from how you would do that.
However, the short term effect of delegation might be more overwhelming vs when you would do a task yourself, the long term effect is lasting longer, doesn’t require so much micromanagement from your side and allowing your employees to grow in their position and develop leadership and independence.
I’ve met leaders though, who would like to delegate to their teams, but the teams are not taking the responsibilities. In the end all the decision making activities and power is located in the leader’s hands, which prevents them from even going on vacation.
Does the situation look familiar to you? Team coaching can be a solution. During the pre-coaching activities, which includes diagnostics, a professional team coach meets and interviews team members individually in order to get a non-bias picture of the current state of the team and to create a blended picture to present to the leader, in order to set up the team coaching goal. Even the collected information might be a serious eye-opener for the leader, as might uncover some issues the leader might be familiar/used to. A coach is delivering the information in a neutral, non-judgmental way, which helps to digest it and see the real picture of the situation.
There might be different reasons why team is not taking the proposed delegation. For example:
They are not readyto take the responsibility, they don't understand what's expected from them- The tasks given to them are too overwhelming
- No clear goal set for them
And many more. In the above situations team coaching can help with getting to the agreements between the leader and the team and finding ways to achieve these agreements. As a supplemental support, personal leadership coaching will be beneficial, helping individuals to work through their personal situations, uncover and unleash their potential and keep them focused on the desired goal.
